An Exceptional Painting by Sayed Haider Raza sold for 4,7 Million Euro at Auction

On 17 March 2024, in Antibes (south of France), the Métayer Mermoz auction house presented at auction an exceptional painting by Sayed Haider RAZA (1922-2016). Paysage Agreste sold for €4,754,500 (including Buyers Premium) to a private Indian collector. This result is now the second highest auction price ever for this artist

"We are very pleased with this excellent result for our vendors. Thanks to the broad promotion of the sale, we were able to reach important Indian art dealers and collectors. After almost 60 years in France, the painting will be going to India, the artist’s birthplace, to which Raza himself returned. This is, of course, a result that has exceeded all our expectations: an extraordinary result for an extraordinary painting. Our business is one of passion and emotion, which is exactly what this painting has given us". Guillaume Mermoz, auctioneer
Painted in 1961, this painting belongs to a critical period for Raza, where figurative landscapes were transforming into powerfully coloured abstraction, fully manifesting the dialogue between the artist’s Indian heritage and the influence of the European avant-garde that is so characteristic of his work. This very large painting (120 x 200 cm) was acquired in 1965, just a few years after its creation. This major work has remained in the same collection ever since, and therefore offered at auction for the first time today. The painting is a major addition to the artist's oeuvre; the Raza Foundation in New Delhi, contacted by auctioneer Guillaume Mermoz, was able to find the trace of the painting in the archives of the gallery Lara Vincy. The painting will be included in the artist's catalogue raisonné.
