AIPAD Appoints Lydia Melamed Johnson as New Executive Director

The Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD) has appointed Lydia Melamed Johnson as the new Executive Director of the photography organization.

The Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD) has appointed Lydia Melamed Johnson as the new Executive Director of the photography organization.

AIPAD is well known for The Photography Show presented by AIPAD, the highly anticipated fair held annually in New York City.

Melamed Johnson was previously Show Director for The Photography Show presented by AIPAD 2022. Last year’s 41st edition of the fair received high praise and excellent reviews in its new location at Center415 on Fifth Avenue in Midtown following a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic. The next AIPAD show will be held March 30 through April 2, 2023 and will return to its location at Center415.

Previously Melamed Johnson was Corporate Partnership and VIP Officer at Paris Photo New York. She founded October Art Week while serving as Director of Robert Simon Fine Art in New York. Melamed Johnson is a member of the Board of the Art History Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

“We are delighted to have Lydia Melamed Johnson as Executive Director at AIPAD,” said Michael Lee, President of AIPAD and Lee Gallery, Winchester, Mass. “Last year, she contributed enormously to the new iteration of the Show, and I am greatly looking forward to her continued success showcasing the best photography in the world.”

“We’ve had an incredible response so far for the 2023 Show, and I’m looking forward to being able to build on what we accomplished last year, including growing to welcome back guest exhibitors and publishers as we did at the Piers” said Lydia Melamed Johnson. “AIPAD and its members’ deep knowledge and expertise is the standard in our industry and the sense of community this organization has created over four decades is a powerful force. I hope to work externally on behalf of AIPAD in the larger, global community, with new collaborations with institutions, membership, and with other events. There is room for more year-round programming and activations, especially in growing our digital channels.”

One of Melamed Johnson’s initiatives will be welcoming younger photography galleries. A  new introductory program, the Associate Membership, will support emerging galleries who have been in business under the five years currently needed for Full membership in AIPAD. The first class of Associate Members will be exhibiting at the 2023 edition.

The Photography Show, a vital part of New York City’s cultural scene and a must-see among fine art photography collectors, is the longest running exhibition dedicated to the photographic medium. The 2023 Show will feature leading galleries from across the U.S. and internationally.
