Now showing at The Design Museum Gent, is a design exhibition titled “Home Stories, 100 Years, 20 Interiors”. Works on view are from renowned artists and designers such as Verner Panton, Finn Juhl, Lina Bo Bardi, Assemble, Andy Warhol, Cecil Beaton and Elsie de Wolfe.
The Design Museum Gent, recently welcomed visitors to its current exhibition titled “Home Stories, 100 Years, 20 Interiors”.
Our homes are an expression of the way we live. They shape our everyday routines and have a fundamental impact on our well-being. A fact that was driven home to us more than ever in 2020. Home Stories showcases interior design ideas from the past 100 years, highlighting how they reflect the radical societal, political and technical shifts of their time. The exhibition revisits some of the decisive moments in this evolution and thus raises an important question: how do we want to live?
The narrative of the exhibition leads you back in time. From current living issues – such as the efficient use of dwindling urban space to the blurring of work-life boundaries – the journey goes on to our fascination for loft living in the early 1970s, the rise of modern household appliances in the 1950s and the first open-plan houses in the 1920s.

Home Stories revolves around 20 interiors by architects such as Verner Panton, Finn Juhl, Lina Bo Bardi and Assemble; artists such as Andy Warhol and Cecil Beaton and interior designer Elsie de Wolfe. Some are iconic, others are not universally known. However, all 20 interiors illustrate major breakthroughs that continue to shape our homes today.
Using furniture, photos, films, drawings, scale models and mood boards of the 20 case studies, Home Stories reveals how varied and surprising interior design can be. A huge contrast with the repetitive Instagram look of modern Western living, that often includes the same design icons, colour palettes and furniture arrangements.
The exhibition will be on view until August 22, 2021.
