WARHOL’S WORLD From Philosophers to Film Stars. Prints & Multiples Auction at Sotheby’s in London on 29 September 2015.
The September sale of Prints & Multiples features an exciting selection covering 500 years of printmaking. A group of Rembrandt landscapes of superlative quality and a rare Jean Duvet etching from his mystical Unicorn Series lead the Old Masters. The evocative woodcuts of turn of the century Expressionism are represented by Munch’s The Girls on the Bridge and Kirchner’s Mädchenakt mit Selbstbildnis. Major Pop prints by Warhol, Lichtenstein and Haring round out the sale. Warhol’s Cowboys and Indians and Campbell’s Soup II, as well as $ (4), are some of the important sets in the sale offered alongside prints from the collection of the publisher Hermann Wünsche and a Private Slovakian Collection formed in the homeland of the Warhola family.
Andy Warhol has long been considered one of the most important graphic artists of the twentieth century. The breadth of his work and the depth of his innovations in printmaking, combined with his prolific output, will be showcased at Sotheby’s in London on 29 September 2015, in the company’s biannual Prints & Multiples sale. Featuring over 30 lots by the artist – and numbering 83 prints in total, comprising single works and complete sets – the auction includes two private collections which provide a fascinating insight into Warhol’s importance in Europe both during his lifetime and soon after his death.
