Party like it’s 1979: interview with Judy Chicago

As befits the hospitable ethic of her best known piece of work, Judy Chicago would make a fantastic guest at any dinner party. When we meet at her London gallery, Riflemaker, the American artist is warm, whip-smart and given to infectious laughter. You might not expect a beleaguered feminist, who for most of her 50-year career has been out in the cold, to have retained such good humour.

Casey Reas’ Linear Perspective

Media artist Casey Reas’ latest exhibition Linear Perspective at Charlie James Gallery in Los Angeles’ Chinatown is presented in a completely blacked out space reminiscent of the void of our societal collective consciousness. Upon entering, one is immediately exposed to the wall-scale title piece, an unfolding electronic painting projected onto a black wall that slowly emerges in digital brushstrokes of surreally flattened and warped images.

3 Signals to the Mermaid: An Inadequate Reading of Costume En Face by Tatsumi Hijikata and/or Moe Yamamoto It is not a book you can read because it was never meant to be read. The publisher describes it as a playscript, but it seems highly unlikely that anyone could use it without supplementary knowledge to produce the piece it purports to script. Costume En Face was meant to be used by its writer, and perhaps by others doing the same kind of work, to take the work deeper. Period. It is an archival object rather than a traditional piece of writing.

Epicenter Projects: Inspired By a Crack in The Earth A few months back, in the ink black hours of night, if you were to drive down the lonely desert highway that weaves in and out of the Coachella Valley, you may have glimpsed a strange light scribing the topography of the mountains. If you had stopped your car, curious as to the origin of these crawling spider veins of this electric spectrum over the contours of rocky landscape, you may have encountered two men playing with lasers like two mad scientists.

Open letter in defence of Anish Kapoor's work This work by Anish Kapoor is universal; it has nothing to do with the King or the Queen, with Versailles or France. Appreciated in 2011 in Italy, it will be just as liked throughout the world, because this work speaks of light, of birth, of life’s journey, of the unknown: the mystery and darkness that surround death. It also tells us that we all come from the same planet and that we have to love it.
