Japan's Naoshima New Museum will open on May 31, 2025

Fukutake Foundation has announced the opening date for Naoshima New Museum of Art. Designed by Tadao Ando and with Miki Akiko as director, the latest addition to the nexus of museums on the island o f Seto Inland Sea in Japan will open on Saturday, May 31, 2025.

Architect Tadao Ando was commissioned to design Naoshima New Museum of Art, which will open its doors to the public on Saturday, May 31, 2025. This will be Ando’s tenth project for Benesse Art Site Naoshima, which has promoted and supported various art and cultural installations on the island since the 1990s.

The museum is located at the top of a hill near the Honmura district. It will play a key role in revitalising the local community, encouraging collaboration with residents and strengthening the connection between art, architecture, nature, and daily life. Its collection will include newly commissioned pieces, created specifically for the spaces in which they will be displayed.

The museum will feature both permanent exhibits and those that change periodically at a gradual rate. Unlike previous facilities at Benesse Art Site Naoshima, which focus more on permanent exhibitions, this approach aims to create dynamic yet unhurried artistic engagement, offering visitors something new with each visit.

In addition to special exhibitions, the museum will host a range of public programs such as talks and workshops designed to convey diverse perspectives, expressions, and multilayered messages about contemporary society. This evolving experience is expected to make it a place where visitors return time and again, encouraging rich exchanges and connections with people from both on and off the island.
