An exhibition focusing on the portrait works of Paul Cézanne is due to make the rounds through London, Paris and Washington DC, starting next year. This exhibition is a collaboration by part of the Musée d’Orsay, the National Portrait Gallery of London, and Washington’s National Gallery of Art, with John Elderfield of the Museum of Modern Art in New York assuming the role of curator.

As Nicholas Cullinan, director of the National Portrait Gallery explains, this exhibition is a long time coming: “Until now, Cézanne's portraiture has received surprisingly little attention”. Within Cézanne's oeuvre we can count up to 200 portraits, 26 of which are self portraits, and 29 are of his wife, Hortense Fiquet. The exhibition will present 50 works, which will include works on loan from Copenhaguen’s Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others from Brazil, Japan, and Russia.

Portraits present a highly intimate view of the artist’s life – the domestic angle that is often obscured. The exhibition will of course feature those closest to the artist, such as his wife and other family members like his Uncle Dominque, but also other characters from his day-to-day, like his gardener.

Cézanne's Portraits will begin at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, from 13 June 2017 to 24 September 2017. It will continue to the National Portrait Gallery in London from 26 October 2017 to 11 February 2018, and will conclude at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC from 25 March 2018 to 1 July 2018.
