De Appel in Amsterdam is Looking for a New Director, Again

Niels Van Tomme leaves De Appel to become the director of Argos in Brussels. Between 2016 and 2018 Van Tomme transformed De Appel into a strong and proud institution. He leaves the organisation feeling confident about its future, while he takes on a new professional challenge in Brussels, close to his young family.

Niels Van Tomme leaves De Appel to become the director of Argos in Brussels.

Niels Van Tomme was appointed director of De Appel in August 2016. His appointment followed a tumultuous time for the organisation and his arrival brought tranquility and stability, but also renewal in terms of housing, the Curatorial Programme, the organisation’s artistic direction, and renewed critical focus on education. Between 2016 and 2018 Van Tomme transformed De Appel into a strong and proud institution. He leaves the organisation feeling confident about its future, while he takes on a new professional challenge in Brussels, close to his young family.

The board and team of De Appel are grateful to Van Tomme for his dedication and contribution to strengthening and renewing the institution. De Appel is currently in good shape: the new location in Amsterdam Nieuw-West is guaranteed for at least another two years, the team is strong and engaged, the programme, its visibility, and visitor numbers are increasing, and the Curatorial Programme in its new form has proven a true success.

Van Tomme will leave De Appel on 30 November 2018. The board has entrusted his duties to Maaike Lauwaert, who is currently head of internal affairs and, from December 1 onwards, becoming acting director of De Appel. The De Appel programme will be continued by Head curator and Manager of the Curatorial Programme Rachael Rakes, while Van Tomme remains involved with the projects he initiated from a distance. In due time, the vacancy for director of De Appel will be made public.

Niels Van Tomme (b. 1977, BE) is a curator, researcher and critic who focuses on the intersections between contemporary culture, social studies and aesthetics. His program at De Appel is characterised by making connections between contemporary issues and artistic practices, a long-term engagement with artists and the interweaving of the public programme, Curatorial Programme, and De Appel Archive.

De Appel is an art institution with a public program, a world-renowned curatorial training programme celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2019, an archive and library. De Appel has been around for 43 years and has proven itself as a leading experimental space for contemporary art. With the Curatorial Programme, which was founded in 1994, it is also exceptionally well networked internationally. De Appel is a place where art and critical reflection, new ideas about the curatorial profession, and years of unique archival material on performance art come together.
