Dutch Royal Art on the Auction Block

The Dutch auction house Ald Fryslân is set to auction a watercolor painting by Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrix on April 30.

The painting measures 50.5 x 63 cm and is signed 'Trix'. It is thought to have been created around 1950. Princess Beatrix gifted the painting to the governess of the princesses Beatrix, Irene, Margriet, and Christina, Baroness Rita van Heeckeren van Molecaten.

The painting features thirteen distinguished young women (possibly princesses) dressed in colorful gowns with skirts, sometimes depicted alone and sometimes in groups. One of them is alongside a man in green puffy trousers who wears a crown (possibly a king). Another woman, holding a large ostrich feather fan, stands under a canopy wearing an orange crown (possibly a queen). She is also the only one adorned with jewelry, wearing a pearl or diamond necklace.

The painting was auctioned at Sotheby’s in Amsterdam in 2006, fetching a considerable amount of nearly €12,000. The buyer at the time was a private collector from Friesland.
